The United States has increased pressure on France and Germany to release some of their emergency diesel reserves, warning that otherwise it could limit American exports of this fuel to Europe.

According to Reuters, citing three people familiar with the discussions, the administration of President Donald Trump has asked the European Union's two largest economies to use strategic reserves to help reduce high fuel prices on international markets.

A source in a European capital told Reuters that Washington has asked the EU to free up 120 million barrels of diesel over the next six months.

"It is in Europe's interest to work with the United States as we pursue several paths to increase the supply of refined products and reduce costs for consumers," a US official said.

Trump wants to lower prices in the US

The pressure comes as Trump is considering banning exports of American diesel in an effort to lower record prices in the United States ahead of November's midterm elections.

For Europe, however, using reserves presents a dilemma. European countries seek to contain fuel prices, but at the same time need to maintain sufficient reserves in case the supply crisis worsens.

The European Commission, Germany, France, Italy, Britain and Ireland held a phone call on Thursday to discuss the possibility of using diesel reserves, according to two EU officials quoted by Reuters.

The International Energy Agency has not yet asked Germany to use its reserves, the German Economy Ministry announced.

Europe most dependent on American fuel

The American pressure comes at a time when Europe has become more dependent on fuel supplies from the United States, after it halted Russian imports following the invasion of Ukraine, and supplies from the Middle East have been hit by the US-Israeli war against Iran.

According to Reuters, the US administration is particularly unhappy with France and Germany, as officials in Washington believe they have not fully implemented previous commitments to use emergency reserves of oil and its products.
