The famous American actor, Morgan Freeman, was the protagonist of the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar, through a dialogue with the local entrepreneur Ghanim al Muftah.

The 85-year-old actor began by narrating a segment entitled "the call", but after a few jokes he also appeared on the stage set up in the middle of the field of the "Al Bayut" stadium. "We're all gathered here as one big tribe," Freeman said.

Freeman was met on stage by 20-year-old Muftah, who was born with a rare disease that prevented his lower limbs from growing. "Come closer," Muftah told him.

When Freeman replied, “I'm not sure, am I welcome?” Muftah said, “That's why we made the call, because everyone is welcome. It was an invitation to the whole world."

Freeman replied: “I remember that, even after we got the call, instead of finding another way, we rejected it and wanted to do it our way. And now the world feels more distant and divided. How can so many countries, languages and cultures come together, if only one way is accepted?".

But on social networks, football fans have reacted negatively against the actor, who appeared four years after accusations of indecent behavior and sexual harassment by a total of 16 people.

Meanwhile, British media reports that television stations there decided not to broadcast the ceremony, instead showing a report on human rights abuses taking place in Qatar.

Qatar has often been criticized for its treatment of foreign workers, members of the LGBTQI+ community and the social restrictions that are in place in the country.
