A group of scientists from several Italian universities have discovered an innovative method for treating epilepsy.

They have exploited the mechanism of flashing lights to prevent the hyperactivity of neurons, typical of epileptic seizures.

Today in the world there are 50 million people who suffer from epilepsy, which is one of the most widespread neurological pathologies, which is characterized by an excessive activation of some neurons, which then cause a problem in the functioning of the brain.

One of the most innovative treatments currently is based on a technique that genetically modifies neurons to induce a protein that is activated in response to light.

But in order to realize this, it is necessary to intervene and place some optical fibers in the brain.

The latest research published in the journal "Nature" looks promising and clinical confirmations will follow.
