An incredible tragedy has occurred in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta where the Asian Youth Badminton Championship (U18) was held. 17-year-old Zhanke Zhiye, representing China, was facing Japan's Kazuma Kawano with the score tied at 11-11 in the first set when he suddenly fell to the ground with convulsions. His opponent was confused, so were the judges and when the coach tried to be near him. These turned out to be the last moments of the life of the unfortunate athlete, who died on the spot.

The voices of the spectators woke the organizers from their slumber, but by the time the first aiders arrived at the top of the Gilet, almost a minute had passed. It was this delay plus the fact that there was no defibrillator that caused great reactions on social networks.

In a statement released by the Badminton Federation of Asia and the Badminton Association of Indonesia, they said the unlucky athlete was taken to hospital by the games ambulance in less than two minutes, but was sadly pronounced dead there.

The local hospital has not yet determined the cause of death, but reports point to cardiac arrest. Zhiye was one of China's biggest badminton talents by a wide margin, having grown up an orphan after losing his father at a young age. And when his mother was informed of the tragic loss, she ended up in a state of shock in the hospital.
