Dracula is without question the most famous vampire in the world. But the man who inspired such a famous image of the bloodthirsty creature may have been fed only vegetables.

At least this is what the analyzes recently developed at the University of Catania suggest.

Prince Vlad, who ruled the province of Wallachia three times between 1448 and 1477, had a habit of stunning his opponents, an act that inspired the British writer Bram Stocker to write his work "Dracula" in 1897.

Today, 500 years later, scientific analysis of some of the letters he wrote shows that Vlad was, in fact, vegan.

The team of researchers from the University of Catania took samples of Vlad's blood, sweat and fingerprints from these papers. The letter is addressed to the lord of a province in present-day Romania and at the end, it is signed: Vlad Dracula.

The researchers found that all of the samples taken lacked animal-based protein, something unusual. "The prototype vampire may have a vegan dog," study co-author Gleb Zilberstein told The Times . "In the 15th century, Europe had a very cold climate and there was very little food. According to bioarchaeologists, aristocrats on the continent had a poor diet and meat was often not consumed."

The researchers also found that the letters had clues that suggested the fearsome ruler suffered from haemolacria, a disease that causes tears of blood.

The findings were published in the journal "Analytical Chemistry".
