The discovery of the structure of the "Great Ring" calls into question the meaning of the universe

Scientists have discovered a ring-shaped structure in space so large that it challenges our knowledge of the universe.

Called the Great Ring, the structure has a diameter of 1.3 billion light years and a circumference of 4 billion light years, or 15 times that of the moon.

This structure made up of galaxies and galaxy plumes is the second giant-sized one to be identified by Alexia Lopez, a British PhD student. Three years ago, it also discovered the Giant Arc, a structure that stretches 3.3 billion light years.

"It is difficult to explain these huge structures with our current knowledge of the universe. Their sizes, distinctive shapes and cosmological proximity must be telling us something important, but what?”

The general agreement is that large structures in the universe are formed by a process called gravitational instability. This process has a size limit of about 1.2 billion light years since anything larger would not have had enough time to form.

But the Giant Arch and the Great Ring are much bigger. The first is three times larger and the circumference of the Ring can be compared to the length of the Bow.

"The data being analyzed are so far away that it took half the life of the universe to reach us," the cosmologist said.
