Whether you sleep on the left or right side of the bed says a lot about the type of person you are, experts have claimed.
People who prefer to sleep on the left are thought to be more creative and confident, while those on the right are more logical and analytical.
A 2021 survey of 2,000 Americans asked participants which side of the bed they slept on and how they would describe their personality.
The study, by OnePoll, found that left-side sleepers were more likely to report traits associated with a more relaxed personality type, such as cheerfulness and imagination.
Those who slept on the right were generally negative in attitude. However, they also tended to make more money.
Hope Bastine, a psychologist and sleep expert at the firm, says these findings are supported by previous research showing that people who sleep on their left side are likely to be happier than right-side sleepers.
"Those who sleep on the left are calmer than their partner and are more secure in general."
It has also been reported that left side sleepers are thought to have a higher level of job satisfaction than right side sleepers.
Meanwhile, right-side sleepers are more likely to be prepared for worst-case scenarios, says Bastine.
They are also more likely to lean politically to the right, while those who sleep on the left side are more likely to lean to the left.
The study does not show why these features may occur.
However, experts have previously suggested that the choice of sleeping position may be influenced by different levels of activity between the two sides of the brain.
For example, brain regions involved in emotion may be more active on the left side in some, which may explain the preference.
The study also pointed out that other factors, such as comfort, come into play when choosing which side of the bed people sleep on.
In the survey, 40 percent of people said they choose the side of the bed that is easiest for them to get in and out of, and 30 percent of people said they decide based on what their partner prefers.
Another 2015 survey also found that 58 percent of men sleep on their right.
