Wrecks of Nazi ships belonging to the Second World War have come to the surface after the droughts of July and August, which significantly lowered the water level in the Danube River. The drop in the water level has made it difficult for water traffic along the course of the Danube.

The ongoing effect of the heat wave has caused four ships, which date back to the 1950s, to come to light in Hungary's Danube-Drava National Park near Mohacs.

Meanwhile, the ships surfaced in the Serbian village of Prahovo were part of hundreds of ships that were destroyed along the Danube River by the Nazi German fleet in 1944.

Eastern Europe is experiencing critical drought conditions, water levels in most rivers have dropped significantly, affecting crops and vegetation.

In Budapest, the water level of the Danube was 1.17 meters, a figure which compares with a historic low recorded in October 2018. Europe's second longest river in 2022 reached its lowest water level in 100 years the last. (Read more!)

The Danube stretches from the Black Forest in southwestern Germany to the Black Sea in eastern Romania.
