Children who live in areas with more greenery have stronger bones than those who live in metropolises, according to a study coordinated by Hasselt University, in Belgium.

Childhood is a crucial period that affects bone health throughout life.

"Peak bone mass is reached in early adulthood and depends on the accumulation of bone mass during skeletal growth and development. For this reason, suboptimal storage at a young age is essential for the onset of osteoporosis", the researchers explain.

The researchers followed 327 children up to the age of 4-6 years, "cross-referencing" data on bone health with those related to the characteristics of residential areas, and found that children who lived in green areas had higher bone mineral, an indicator of bone health and an up to 67% lower risk of suffering from brittle bones.

According to the researchers, the explanation for the beneficial effects of urban greenery may lie in the fact that the availability of greenery increases the probability of performing physical activity. This, in turn, promotes bone strengthening processes.
