The study on public transport in Europe, which citizens are most dissatisfied?

Public transport has a great impact on the overall satisfaction of residents with the city they live in, according to the European Commission report.

The survey on the quality of life in European countries, which collected responses from over 71,000 people in 83 cities in Europe, found that in 2023, approximately seven in 10 residents were generally satisfied with public transport.

However, there is a large gap in public transport satisfaction levels between them. As far as the capitals are concerned, the residents of Tirana and Rome are the most dissatisfied, registering the lowest figure (29%). According to the study, satisfaction in the capital ranges up to 91 percent in Vienna.

This disparity is even greater between cities, with rates ranging from 22 percent in Palermo, Italy to 95 percent in Zurich, Switzerland.

A geographical trend is observed where Northern and Western European countries reported higher satisfaction with public transport, while Southern and Eastern European countries showed lower levels of satisfaction.

For example, satisfaction with public transport exceeded 85 percent in three Nordic capitals, such as Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm, closely followed by Copenhagen, at 81 percent. While more than half of residents in six southern capitals were dissatisfied with transport services, including Tirana, Rome, Podgorica, Belgrade, Nicosia and Skopje.

The survey asked residents for their perceptions of whether public transportation is affordable, safe, easy to access, frequent, and reliable.

Rome recorded the lowest scores in four of the main indicators, such as safety, accessibility, frequency and reliability. Also, the capitals of EU candidate countries had low results in these indicators.
