Fewer movie stars attended the opening of the 80th Venice Film Festival yesterday evening, due to the Hollywood strike.

In addition to the members of the jury, which includes American director Damien Chazelle, New Zealand director Jane Campion and Irish director Martin McDonagh, mainly Italian celebrities and politicians stepped on the carpet.

Italian actress, Caterina Murino, the head of the festival, welcomed the guests at the opening ceremony.

"A warm and supportive greeting to those who are not here with us because they are busy defending the intellectual and economic value of their work," Murino said.

"They remind us that artistic creation is the prerogative of passionate and talented women and men, and that our work cannot be delegated to algorithms and artificial intelligence," she emphasized.

More than 11,000 unionized screenwriters have been on strike in the US since early May.

Tens of thousands of members of the actors' union SAG-AFTRA have also been on strike since mid-July.

Both unions are demanding improved pay and protections against the use of artificial intelligence.

Italian director Liliana Cavani, 90, was honored with the Golden Lion award, which was presented to her by British actress Charlotte Rampling, who played the lead role in Cavani's 1974 film The Night Porter.

"I am the first woman to receive this award and I think this is not fair," said Cavani.

"There are screenwriters and directors who work, who probably work at the same level as men. I believe that the festival should take this into account and that women can make films too," she said.

The festival opened with the film "Comandante" by the Italian director, Edoardo De Angelis.

It tells the story of a submarine commander in World War II who makes a bold decision to travel across the Atlantic.

"Comandante" is one of 23 films competing for the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion, which will be awarded on September 9.

German director Timm Kroeger is also represented in the competition.

The premiere of his film "Theory of Everything" will be shown on September 3.
