The American city of Milwaukee is now home to the tallest wooden tower in the world. But another, even taller, wooden skyscraper may be added to its skyline, designed by Vancouver-based studio Michael Green Architects (MGA).
The firm recently released plans for a 55-story tower made mostly of wood. If built, it would take the place of the 25-story Ascent tower, as well as become the tallest building in the state of Wisconsin.
Although the use of massive timber is steadily increasing around the world, it has yet to match the sheer height of buildings made of concrete and steel.
Currently, the construction sector accounts for 37% of global emissions, much of it due to the production and use of materials such as concrete and steel, which are massive carbon emitters. Trees are the opposite and if converted into massive timber and used for construction, the carbon is "locked in" for as long as the building lasts.
However, building with wood also has its challenges, but the hope of the construction company is that the Milwaukee tower will promote architecture that remains friendly to the climate and nature.
