Prince Harry learned of the Queen's death from news on the Internet

Prince Harry desperately tried to get to his grandmother's bedside to say goodbye — but only found out she had died by reading the news online, multiple palace sources told Page Six.

Strain and agony were etched on Harry's face as he was taken to Balmoral, the Queen's Scottish residence, hours after she had already died on September 8.

A Buckingham Palace insider told Page Six that Harry had been summoned to Scotland by his father, the new King Charles III, in the morning. However, another palace source confirmed that no one from the royal family, or any courtiers, actually called Harry to tell him of the monarch's death - leaving him to learn from news reports when he arrived late in the afternoon.

The Queen's passing has left Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, spending more time with relatives than they have since stepping back from their royal roles in January 2020. Now the question is: What will happen to the relationship? their damaged?

Harry and Markle reportedly returned to their home in Montecito, California, on Wednesday to be reunited with their children Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1. An insider told 'Page Six': "I think the way Harry and Meghan have appeared in the last few days shows that they were just hoping to do the right thing and the right thing by everyone."

Asked if Harry and his brother Prince William have patched things up, palace sources confirmed the two spoke at dinners. Gayle King, a friend of the Sussexes who was in London to cover the funeral, told CBS Mornings this week: "There has been effort on both sides ... to make this right."

Adding that there had been no real rapprochement despite these "efforts", King added: "Big families always go through drama, always go through turmoil. It remains to be seen – will they grow closer together or drift apart? I don't have any inside information on this, but I will tell you this: It was good to see Harry staying with his family.”

With the shadow of the prince's planned biopic - and news that it will be pushed back to 2023 - still hanging over the family, another royal source denied a recent report that Markle had requested a "one-on-one" chat with Charles before for the Sussexes to head home, calling it a "complete lie".

The Queen's death has led to an attempt by family members to thaw the ice between Harry and his family - particularly Charles and William - but there were moments over the past two weeks when the palace's decision to stick to protocol showed that how awkward things remain.

The death was announced at 6.30pm local time, minutes before Harry landed at Aberdeen Airport from London - having taken a separate private jet after he was kicked out of the one carrying his brother, their uncle Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, and Edward's wife, Sophie Wessex. In the end, only Charles and his sister, Princess Anne, were there when the Queen died in the afternoon.

Harry, 38, arrived at Balmoral just before 8pm to join the others, including Camilla. It was the first time Harry had been in a room with the full family since he and Markle stepped down from royal life in March 2020 and moved to the United States.

The couple hit the headlines on September 8, as soon as news broke that Harry was flying solo to his grandmother's house. Markle was originally going to join her husband, but decided against it after learning that her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, was staying home with her children, who had just spent their first day at a new school.
