Thanks to many movies and a mental image we have created, whenever we hear talk about the pyramids we immediately transport ourselves to Egypt, where the pyramids, those massive triangular tombs, have become synonymous with the country itself.

But there's a problem: contrary to what many of us think, Egypt is not the pyramid capital of the world, nor is it of northern Africa.

That honor goes to Egypt's neighbor, Sudan.

Yes, the country with the largest number of pyramids in the world is Sudan. It has 200 to 250 pyramids, compared to Egypt's 138.

The pyramids in Sudan were built by members of the Kingdom of Kush, an ancient civilization that ruled the area along the Nile River from 1070 BC to 350 AD.

The inhabitants of the kingdom adopted all aspects of Egyptian culture, from the gods to the hieroglyphic writing. After the fall of the Egyptian Empire in 1070 BC, the Kush retained their customs and built their pyramids.

The pyramids were used as tombs for kings and queens.
