Oslo and Berlin will be connected by train again for the first time in more than 20 years, with a new direct service expected to launch in 2028.

The cooperation between Norwegian railway operator Vy, Danish company DSB and Deutsche Bahn from Germany will make this cross-border line possible without the need for any train changes along the way.

Deutsche Bahn's ICE L trains will connect the two capitals via Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmö and Gothenburg. The route includes stops in cities such as Moss, Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Halden, Trollhättan, Gothenburg, Halmstad, Helsingborg, Lund, Malmö, as well as at Copenhagen Airport and København H station. The trains will then continue on to Odense, Kolding, Padborg and Hamburg, before arriving in Berlin.

According to Vy, the journey from Oslo to Copenhagen will take around 7 hours, while the entire Oslo-Berlin route will take approximately 15 hours. There has not been a direct rail connection from Norway to Copenhagen for more than 20 years, the operator points out.

The new line is scheduled to operate twice daily in both directions starting in the summer of 2028, with timetables and prices to be made public closer to the launch of the service.

Vy's CEO, Gro Bakstad, called this a very important development that strengthens Norway's ties with Europe and opens the possibility for future direct connections with other European cities.

While Michael Peterson from DB Fernverkehr emphasized that train travel is a strong alternative to cars and planes, especially in conditions of high fuel prices, underlining the importance of this new line that unites three Northern European capitals.
