Meet the scariest country in the world

In 2019, 57 scientists and their crew embarked on a 54-day journey to the farthest reaches of Antarctica. Their mission was called "Thwaites Glacier", which is actually a block of ice with the same surface area as Great Britain, which has begun to disintegrate very quickly. It is also known as the 'last glacier'. But not only that, it is considered the scariest country in the world. This enigmatic place is located at the far ends of the Amundsen Sea.

According to studies conducted, Thwaites Glacier is melting 8 times faster than in the 1990s. 80 billion tons of ice increase the water level in the oceans by 4% every year. If this colossal mass of ice were to melt, it would cause chaos both with the water level and the temperatures.

However, scientist Mathieu Morlighem has recently declared that Thwaites is "a disaster in slow motion".

The famous writer Elizabeth Rush also has her own version of this destination. She was part of the famous trip in 2019, which she documented through her book "The Quickening".

He remembers it as a distant, cold and never-before-visited place.

"It changed my perception of the world and some of the most fragile ecosystems that exist," she says. She also emphasizes that she would not suggest Antarctica as a tourist destination.

"I don't think that tourism in these untouched and remote places should turn into something normal. But on the other hand, the more we see something, the more the curiosity and interest increases. The first person saw Antarctica 200 years ago... This is such a powerful place, there is no second like it on the planet. Every other place you go has stories to tell going back thousands of years. Thwaites Glacier has none of that! It causes a kind of surprise and fascination, but we must be aware that it must be treated as a separate destination", said the writer in an interview.
