Humans, one step closer to living on Mars. What do the researchers propose?

Researchers have long sought a way to bring life to Mars, and a new scientific discovery could make it a reality. A team of scientists have proposed an 'innovative' way to heat the Red Planet.

They proposed injecting large amounts of Martian dust into the atmosphere to improve its ability to trap heat, just as water vapor and carbon dioxide do on Earth.

The release of about 10 liters of dust per second, which will consist of iron and aluminum, for at least a decade could heat the planet from -65 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The researchers' approach is actually based on the same atmospheric mechanism that is driving climate change here on Earth: the greenhouse effect. Currently, Mars' atmosphere is so thin that the sun's heat easily escapes from the planet's surface. The microscopic size and spherical shape of Martian dust does not allow it to absorb radiation or reflect heat back to the surface.

But the research team believes they can use the iron and aluminum in the powder to deposit particles nine micrometers long, nearly twice the size of a Martian dust particle.

This approach would require about two million tons of particles per year, but their production would be relatively easy because the ingredients are right there on Mars. The strategy will require several decades, but it seems easier and more logical than any other idea proposed so far.

Warming Mars would be a critical first step toward making this planet a suitable home for humans. It would free the water that is frozen in the polar ice caps beneath the planet's surface and make Mars a more suitable place for agriculture.

However, humanity still has a long way to go before it can colonize the Red Planet. Even with this new atmosphere, humans still wouldn't be able to breathe on Mars because the air doesn't contain enough oxygen.

Also, the air pressure is 150 times better than on Earth, which would cause human blood to boil.
