A science-fiction concept to build a lunar railway could be a step closer to reality, after receiving money and time from NASA, writes the BBC.

The "Flexible Levitation on a Track (Float)" project would use magnets to "float" like a robotic tray on the surface of the Moon, allowing astronauts to transport objects and materials more easily.

Float was first proposed in 2021 and is one of six ideas selected to support the second phase of NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program.

This seems to be developing exciting ideas that could become new space missions. In the plans presented by NASA, each individual floating robot would be able to transport up to 30 kilograms of cargo on railway tracks.

But unlike railroads on Earth, which are built and drilled into the ground, these tracks will simply run across the surface of the Moon, leaving no damage.

It's still early days for the team as the idea will first be tested on Earth, with a few prototype robots.

It is hoped that Float could play a role in NASA's Moon to Mars program, which aims to build a stable and permanent base on the Moon from which to launch future Mars missions.
