LinkedIn, the popular professional networking platform, is gaining an unusual use: more and more singles are using it to meet new people and, in some cases, to start romantic relationships.
Fatigue from traditional online dating apps is driving some users to seek alternatives. One such is LinkedIn, where professional photos, information about a person's career, education, and interests offer a broader picture than typical dating app profiles.
According to a survey conducted by Zety, about one in four professionals believe that using LinkedIn for romantic purposes can be acceptable. Meanwhile, 22% of respondents said they have either approached or responded to someone on LinkedIn with romantic intent.
From a professional request to a love story
One of the cases is that of Rachel Wong and Sam Sawchuck.
Sawchuck sent Wong a request to connect on LinkedIn, saying they had mutual friends and colleagues and that he would like to meet up for coffee. He also told her that he had first met her on Tinder.
Wong was initially unsure if it was a romantic date. However, after her colleagues gave Sawchuck a positive review and after she saw his professional profile, she decided to accept the request.

She began the communication by asking for help with a work issue. The relationship then evolved and today the couple is preparing for marriage.
"If it was LinkedIn, let it be LinkedIn. It was the best connection I ever made," Wong said.
The platform does not approve of flirting.
Despite such cases, LinkedIn does not consider the platform a place for romantic advances.
A spokesperson for the company said its focus is to ensure users are protected from unwanted romantic advances.
However, some dating experts say that LinkedIn can be used as an indirect way to get to know someone, as long as the communication remains respectful and doesn't turn into harassment.
Professional profile as a “folder” for a meeting
For some young people, LinkedIn is also serving as a tool to pre-screen the person they may be facing.
Katie Istomin, a student at Cornell, says she and her friends look at profiles of people they might be interested in, checking their major, university activities, and involvement in organizations.
According to her, the professional profile can give an idea of a person's ambitions and objectives.
But LinkedIn also has a feature that could make this “investigation” difficult to hide: the platform can notify users when someone has viewed their profile.
Even recruitment can end in one meeting
Another story started completely professionally.
Amal Hagisufi sent a request to Moustafa Madkaur after she was looking for an employee for her team. Madkaur was initially not interested, as the office was about 40 minutes away.
Later, he saw Hagisuf on a dating app and returned to her LinkedIn profile. After seeing her career description and professional goals, he decided to write to her again.
This time, not for the workplace.
He left her his phone number and told her he wasn't interested in the position, but that he had seen her on a dating app and would like to go out together.
They met at a restaurant by the water and discussed their professional, financial and personal goals. According to Hagisuf, many of their goals were aligned.
A symptom of dating app fatigue
The phenomenon of LinkedIn as a space for romantic acquaintances is seen as part of a broader trend: singles are looking for alternatives to traditional dating apps.
Meetings through joint activities, events, sports clubs, mutual friends, and professional communities are gaining ground.
In this reality, LinkedIn offers something that many dating apps have missed: more information about the person before the meeting.
However, the line between professional networking and romantic interest remains delicate. A connection request may be purely professional, while for another person it may be the beginning of a love story.
Finally, it seems that even in the career world, what dating app users have long been looking for can happen: a "connection" that works.
