Portugal says goodbye to Bob, the world's oldest dog, who died aged 31 years and 163 days.

The sad news was shared on social media by Karen Becker, a veterinarian who attended her 31st birthday party on May 11.

Bobby, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, held the Guinness World Record for the oldest dog of all time, a remarkable achievement for a herding dog breed with an average lifespan of 12-14 years. He had set the new world record in February.

His date of birth was confirmed by the Leiria Municipality Veterinary Medical Service together with the government-run SIAC database of domestic animals. Born and raised in Portugal, in the province of Leiria, Bobi had survived the slaughter of his brothers thanks to the color of his fur, which helped him blend in among the trees, while the other puppies were given by the family of Leonel Costa, which they could not hold and then they were killed.

Little Leonel was 8 years old at the time and discovered Bob among the wood of his house in the village, because Bob's mother continued to go there often. At that moment, the parents couldn't help but hold the puppy. Now Leonel is almost 40 years old and has spent almost his entire life with his dog.

In an interview, he also revealed the "secret" of his four-legged friend's long life: the importance of good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to explore the surrounding environment, regular veterinary care and, above all, love.

For his 31st birthday, a big "traditional Portuguese" party was organized with 100 guests, including international ones. "Bob is also special because looking at him is a bit like remembering the people who were part of our family and unfortunately are no longer here, like my father, my brother or my grandparents who have already left this world," said Leonel.
