The Ryugyong Hotel, otherwise known as the "Doomsday Hotel", is located in the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang, and has been declared the ugliest in the world.

The foundations of this massive hotel, in which 700 million euros were invested, were laid in 1987, but until today no one has stayed in it.

The hotel was supposed to open in 1989 at the World Youth and Student Festival and thus win the record for the tallest building in the world, but it never happened. North Korea experienced economic collapse after investing a large amount of money in building a new stadium and expanding the airport.

The structure of the building was built in 1992, when the works were stopped. After 16 years, the bare concrete structure was covered with glass and metal plates and this venture cost 167 million euros.

German luxury hotel chain Kempinski publicly disclosed its involvement in the hotel's management and announced a grand opening in 2013. Just a few months later, they abandoned the project, after which rumors spread that the building was internally unsafe.

One of those rare people allowed to visit the hotel was Simon Cockerell, the director of a travel agency from Beijing, who in 2012 found the bare, unfinished concrete infrastructure.

"It took us a long time to take the elevator to the 99th floor, because there is only a construction elevator, not a modern one with all the buttons," he explained.
