In her book The Cactus and Snowflake at Work, coach and consultant Devora Zack explains the differences between those at work who are driven by emotions and those who are driven by rationality. The author calls the first "snowflakes", while the second, "cactus".
"Cactus-type" people tend to be logical, reserved analytical and quite direct in their approach, while "snowflakes" are more sensitive, capable of mediation and diplomacy.
This is a topic addressed in the 1920s by Karl Gustav Jung, who spoke of extroverted and introverted personalities (with a series of further subcategories).
Why is it important to understand if you are a "cactus" or a "snowflake" in the workplace?
An expert explains this to us.
"Cactus" and "snowflake" at work, why it is useful to know your identity
"Devora Zack's book, famous among employees, deals with a classic topic of work psychology, that of psychological types or personality traits - explains Davide Cortesi, consultant and empowerment specialist.
It is a very interesting argument with a useful application, as it allows people to know themselves better (self-awareness) but also to know the other better, for example the leader, colleague, collaborator with whom they work every day.
In this way it is possible to refine the strengths, understanding what are the areas of improvement and the limiting behaviors that you automatically do in certain situations.
It is important to remember that every person is unique and unrepeatable. Typifications represent important tools to know, understand and improve, but they should not imprison people in prepackaged boxes, destined to become stereotypes.
The expert explains what are the characteristics that distinguish those who at work are guided by emotions (snowflakes) and by logic (cactus). And the secrets to work well, aware of needs, strengths and defects.
Characteristics of "snowflakes"
Snowflakes are subjects whose attention is naturally directed toward the relationship and (deeper) purpose of things. They tend to feel and experience emotions and be guided by them.
Naturally, they are sensitive, know how to be in harmony with others, understand them and put themselves in their place. They are careful in relationships and towards the other, as the bearer of diversity, i.e. value. They love sharing and sharing. They have good negotiation skills.
Characteristics of "cactus"
"Cactus" people tend towards knowledge and information. They tend towards analysis, they evaluate every situation, big and small, as if they had a microscope. Everything has a reason, they tend to reason over every possible complication. They find it difficult to manage emotions, especially intense ones, because they consider them inherently deceptive and illogical.
They may appear reserved and cold, but often this is a way to protect themselves and their privacy, as they do not like intrusions. They are direct in expressing their point of view.
"Snowflakes", needs and requirements
They need real, deep relationships. People with this trait look to managers, co-workers and colleagues for the opportunity for human contact. They like to cooperate and do group work to achieve results.
Snowflakes need people who do not abuse their readiness and do not make them feel weak because of "exposed" sensitivity.
"Cactus", needs and requirements
People with these characteristics do not want anyone to invade their territory, unless they are explicitly given permission. They don't like to be asked personal questions.
"Cactus" like to work with competent and reliable people, not too pushy in relationships and able to respect the sacred silence necessary to reason. They don't like people who waste their time, they ask colleagues and managers to get to the heart of the matter immediately.
Useful tips for "snowflakes"
To avoid being too unbalanced in their mode, these people may try to be alone, taking time out of the group dimension. They should practice saying no and ask themselves with an analysis exercise what they expect from the other, learning to change this expectation into a clear request.
Useful tips for "cactus"
Take some time to get to know colleagues and associates (one by one) on a deeper level. Force yourself to socialize and open up (a little more). Every once in a while, come out of your secret solitude and ask a colleague if they need anything.
Reduce (indirect) communication via e-mail and deal with hot and emotional issues face-to-face: it will help you grow and teach you to manage your emotions and those of others.
