Winter in Finland: See how boiling water instantly turns into an ice cloud
The experiment of a Finn

Record low temperatures in Finland this week inspired a tourist on a trip to the Arctic to try a trick that has long intrigued him - throwing boiling water into the air when it's bitterly cold outside and watching it instantly turn into a cloud icy dust.

It's not something to try unless the temperatures are at an icy level that most places on earth rarely or never see.

Lauri Untamo, a 49-year-old sales manager from southern Finland, was on holiday where the temperature dropped to minus 30 degrees Celsius on New Year's Day.

"I've seen videos of that trick on social media or YouTube that could be done, but I've never had the right frost to try it in minus 30 degrees or more," Untamo told Reuters.

He said he had boiled water in his cabin, quickly brought it out and boldly threw it over his head, without getting burned, as the water immediately turned into a cloud of ice which then disappeared.

The Nordic countries have experienced extremely cold weather in recent days, with the lowest temperature in 25 years at minus 44.3 Celsius recorded on Friday in Enonteki, in the arctic north, where Untamo stayed with his friends.
