Offering bread and drink before anything else is a 'trick' that restaurant owners have to get customers to eat more food.

Neuroscientist Daniel Amen says that foods like bread and drinks before meals affect the brain and make it harder for people to control their hunger.

Both bread and alcohol release serotonin in the brain, making you feel happier and calmer.

It may sound strange since both of these products make us high, but it happens that serotonin drops very quickly and this makes people seek more of it, filling the stomach.

"When you go to a restaurant, the first thing the waiters do is put bread on the table and ask you if you want alcohol, because both affect the frontal lobes," says Amen, adding that both products make it more likely for you to order more and spend more money at the restaurant.

However, this is not a conspiracy created by restaurant owners, chefs and waiters. It's just neuroscience.

Amen explained that bread and alcohol cause frontal lobe depression.

The frontal lobe is the part of the human brain involved in all kinds of higher-order functions, things like planning, problem solving, motivation, judgment, social behavior, and impulse control.

As for bread, Amen explained that the effect has a lot to do with blood sugar.

"Bread is an investment on their part because bread gives you a spike in blood sugar, which then pushes serotonin into your brain and makes you happy," he said.

And drinking alcohol has the same effect.

However, when serotonin dries up, the frontal lobe declines and the person has difficulty controlling their emotions and urges.

Another side effect is that eating bread can cause your blood sugar to rise and then drop quickly, making you feel hungrier and order more.
