A mysterious monolith was discovered again in the mountains near Las Vegas. Behind the hype about the monolith lies a very down-to-earth explanation. But why do inexplicable and mysterious things fascinate us so much?
Las Vegas is considered the world capital of entertainment, as an attractive "sin city", as a gambling paradise with an unbridled night life. It is possible that this infamous name has spread throughout the universe.
This may at least explain who placed another mysterious pillar near the top of Gass Peak. The "mysterious monolith" was discovered last weekend 30 kilometers from Las Vegas in a barren rocky landscape, the police announced.
"We see a lot of strange things, when people climb the mountain unprepared for the weather, without taking enough water with them... but take a look at this!", the police wrote.
In order for the structure of the rectangular mirror to be discovered quickly, it was placed near a mountain pass. Unfortunately, the car doesn't go directly there, but if it did, it wouldn't be so mysterious.
Imitations all over the world
The fame of the monolith immediately catches fire on social and serious media. Because it is suspected that this monolith was also placed by aliens.
Most recently in March 2024, a similar monolith in a deserted place in Wales made headlines. A limber climber posted a photo of himself in front of the three-meter-tall shiny object. "It looks like a UFO," he told The Guardian newspaper. "The object does not look as if someone threw it there, but as if someone deliberately pressed it to the ground", analyzes the climber.
The discoverer and the newspaper did everything right: They created a mystery about the origin and used the most important words: "creepy" and "UFO", and the announcement immediately went around the world.
Aliens as the answer - what else?
It is notable that the aliens seem to be particularly interested in highly abandoned areas. Because back in 2020, when people everywhere on earth were battling a minor coronavirus, US officials discovered the first monolith in Red Rock County, Utah, while counting sheep from a helicopter. A sensation! Everyone reported on this strange structure in the lost.
Very soon, similar objects were discovered in California, Romania, Great Britain, Holland, Turkey and in the German state of Hessen. Often in places where there is almost nothing!
The magic of the incomprehensible
The inexplicable, mysterious and undiscovered things have fascinated us since the beginning. Mystical places and things that (initially) we cannot explain, awaken our curiosity.
American psychologist W. McDoPgall said at the beginning of the 20th century, that curiosity is the essence of any kind of motivation. The more remote, the more inaccessible, the greater the curiosity. The legendary island of Atlantis, the Bermuda triangle that swallows ships, UFOs and aliens, astrology, supernatural powers or giant circles in wheat fields, the more inexplicable, the more attractive.
Looking for explanations
We humans want to understand and explain things. What remains secret for us, what is "incomprehensible", we call "mysterious".
"It is the magic of the extraordinary", says Dr. Picologist. Günter Molz from Bergische Universität in Wuppertal
"Those who defend extraordinary theses are 'not normal', in the sense that they are not ordinary, they are not monotonous. They represent an exclusive position, which makes them feel privileged in a narcissistic way," Molz tells DW. These people may have an excessive need for admiration.
When there is something mysterious, we look for more or less plausible explanations – for example in science, in prescience or pseudoscience, in esotericism, in superstition or in religion. All fields tend to claim to be absolutes. "Non-scientific explanations also have the advantage of exclusivity. that we mentioned above", says psychologist Molz
Attention instead of aliens
It could be that an extraterrestrial life form has increased interest in the barren rocky landscape near Las Vegas or in the province of Wales. Yet monoliths in the past proved to be relatively uncarved attempts at attention.
Because as soon as a monolith becomes known, a river of tourists and curiosities flocks to the objects. And after them souvenir dealers, snack bars, etc.
Artist Matty Way was responsible for the first monolith in Utah. When the media frenzy reached its peak, he proclaimed himself "the most famous artist". Through his collective of artists, copies of the monolith can be ordered for $45,000.
Great business idea, thought four amateur artists from California and also built monoliths in the sunny state. Many others followed and thus began the phenomenon of monoliths.
However, the monoliths in Romania, Spain and Hesse were so badly attached that the aliens would surely have been ashamed of them.
The dark side of fame
Once curiosity is piqued, which is much easier today thanks to social networks, then everyone wants to see the place or object or make money from it. Who knows, how long it can still be seen.
This was immediately emphasized by the flexible discoverer from Wales: "I can't say how long the object will be there, to be honest", he said. "As far as I know our national parks, they don't find it amusing when someone just puts something in there."
He's probably right. After the brief joy of the windfall, comes the anger of local residents and environmentalists as they experience how the previously untouched landscape is polluted and destroyed by the floods.
We want to remind all visitors that the use, occupation and development of public lands and their resources is illegal, no matter what planet you come from,” the Land Management Agency joked on Twitter.
Many of the monoliths were quickly destroyed or removed by the authorities. As a precaution, the Utah Department of Public Safety kept the exact location of the monolith a secret, in order not to create an influx of tourists and not to build other objects in the untouched nature./ DW
