Skiing, cable cars, and snow-covered slopes for the winter are no longer guaranteed.

By 2100, the climate crisis threatens to drastically shorten ski seasons and increase environmental and economic costs, writes focus.it.

Scientists have collected data on the slopes of Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis, the largest ski area in Switzerland with 100 km of slopes.

Artificial snow production also requires certain temperature and humidity requirements. The drier the air and the colder the outside air and water used, the more efficient this process is.

If temperatures rise or the air is too humid, artificial snow production becomes uneconomical.

Furthermore, there will be the problem of where to find all this water. Currently, water for the study area is taken from the Oberalpsee, a nearby lake in the canton of Uri, which provides a maximum of 200 million liters per year for this purpose.

However, the same body of water also supplies the area with hydroelectric power.

Here, as elsewhere, this will create a conflict over the different uses of water reserves, which are likely to become increasingly depleted due to climate change.
