August 31 will mark 25 years since Princess Diana died after suffering fatal injuries in a car crash in Paris.

The accident happened when Diana's driver, Henri Paul, lost control of the car and crashed into a column in the middle of the Pont de l'Alma tunnel.

He passed away, along with the Princess of Wales and her partner at the time, Dodi Al Fayet.

Emergency services were quickly called to the scene and Xavier Gourmelon, who was part of the response team, says he was unaware Diana was one of the victims initially.

"When I arrived, her eyes were open and she was conscious," he told The Sun. Before they took her out of the car, he held her hand and comforted her.

"My God, what happened," asked Diana afterwards, which were also her last words.

"I massaged her heart and a few seconds later she started breathing again. Of course it was a relief because, as a first responder, you want to save lives – and that's what I thought I had done. To be honest, I thought she would live, as far as I knew when she was in the ambulance she was alive and I expected her to live. But later I found out that she had died in the hospital. It was very disturbing."

It wasn't until Diana was put into an ambulance that an aide told Gourmelon who the victim was.
