The "father" of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud (Zigmund Freud) was born in Moravia (May 6, 1856), a region in the eastern part of the Czech Republic, while he spent most of his life in Vienna, Austria.
He studied medicine and by the end of the 19th century, he came up with some very interesting new ideas about the human mind. However, Freud devoted his first scientific work to sea animals, including the sexuality of eels.
He was one of the first scientists to conduct serious research about the mind, conducting long conversations with patients, and studying their dreams to find the causes of mental and emotional problems.
Freud also used hypnosis as a way to see if patients would find it easier to ease their troubled minds. But in most cases, the positive effects were temporary.
Freud believed that all painful childhood memories are stored unconsciously deep in the mind. This part of the mind, he said, contains wishes, desires, and experiences too frightening for others to know.
He thought that these memories could be brought to the conscious mind, the patient would feel pain again, but this time the person would experience it as an adult; he would feel them, examine them, and finally understand them.
Freud reasoned that by using this method, the pain and emotional stress of the past would be significantly weakened; these feelings would lose their strength, and soon the patient would feel better.
He came up with the proposition that the mind is divided into three parts: Id, Ego and Superego.
According to this theory, the Superego acts as a container that is guided by the values that a person learns from parents and society.
The job of the Superego is to keep the Id in check. The id is completely unconscious, but serves as food for feelings that seek immediate gratification or the fulfillment of needs and desires at all costs.
Ego – Uni or Self provides immediate response to reality events. Uni is the first line of defense of oneself from the other. Uni tries to balance the two extremes, Id and Superego,
Many of Freud's theories on how the mind works also had strong sexual connections.
These ideas include what Freud termed the repressed feelings of boys toward mothers, and girls toward fathers.
Freud was also nominated for the Nobel Prize, but although he discovered a lot, contributed a lot and developed important theories, he never won the prize.
His daughter, Anna Freud, began to accompany him in various seminars, and sometimes replaced him. Anna was first a patient of her father, then she studied psychoanalysis herself, and became his secretary, nurse but also as his most trusted colleague.
The coming of the Nazis to power in Germany and the persecution of the Jews, forced Freud to leave in 1938 to England. In 1923, Freud was diagnosed with oral cancer, and for this he underwent dozens of operations, from the very beginning of the disease in Austria.
Shortly after his arrival in England, his pain became so great that his doctor on one occasion injected him with a lethal dose of morphine on September 23, 1939.
Freud has been called the father of psychoanalysis, although today many psychologists have rejected his theses. But everyone agrees on his enormous impact on the science of mental health.
