Oscar Wilde is a prominent Irish writer, poet and playwright. He was born on October 16, 1854 in Dublin and died in 1900 in Paris. He came from a family of Anglo-Irish intellectual parents.
He participated in many different literary activities and held various lectures on aestheticism in America and Canada. He then returned to London, where he practiced as a journalist and with his sharp wit, dress and oratory became one of the most prominent personalities of the time.
He gave great importance to art, expressing his ideas through various dialogues, essays, which contained views on decadence, beauty, etc., which are also embodied in his only novel "The Portrait of Dorian Gray", published in 1890.
Because of his ideas, especially those on homosexuality, for which he was directly accused and arrested in 1895, Wilde spent several years imprisoned in London.
In 2007 Wilde was voted Britain's greatest wit in a poll of more than 3,000 comedians, beating Winston Churchill, Spike Milligan and Noel Coward.
Wilde was noted for insight, and readers of his works are attracted not only by the books written, but also by his sayings.
