The US election on "Super Tuesday" confirmed what was expected for some time: Donald Trump will be the Republican candidate for the White House, repeating the 2020 challenge with Joe Biden, which already began with his speech last night.
With voting closed across the US, Biden is believed to have won the Democratic nomination races in 14 states - plus Iowa, where people voted by mail
Meanwhile, Trump is projected to have won 12 Republican contests — further cementing his strong overall lead over Nikki Haley, although Haley is projected to win Vermont unexpectedly.
Trump described it as an "amazing day" and launched an attack on Biden, who responded in kind and insisted "we're going to win" the presidency in 2024.
Super Tuesday elections were held in 16 states and one territory, from Alaska to California to Vermont and Virginia. 1/3 of party delegates are elected by millions of Americans. It is the delegates who decide on the presidential candidate, who will compete on behalf of the Republican or Democratic Party in the November 5 elections.
