A 22-year-old Iranian woman died a few days after she was arrested by the "morality police" in her country. She was accused of not complying with the strict rules on head covering. This has caused outrage on social media.

Eyewitnesses said that Mahsa Amini was beaten while inside a police van. She was arrested on Tuesday in Tehran. The police have denied the charges. The authorities said that Amini "had suddenly suffered a heart problem".

This is the latest in a series of reports of brutality against women by authorities in Iran in recent weeks. Amini's family said she was a young and healthy woman. They added that there was no medical reason to explain a sudden heart problem.

They were informed that she had been taken to the hospital a few hours after her arrest. The family said she had slipped into a coma before she died on Friday. Tehran police said the 22-year-old woman was arrested for "clarification and education" about the hijab. This is the headscarf which is obligatory for all women.

Her death follows growing reports of repressive acts against women. This includes those deemed not to be in accordance with the Islamic dress code. Women are barred from entering government offices and banks.

The latest episode would only deepen the rift between much of Iran's young and vibrant society and its radical rulers. This rift seems increasingly difficult to fix.
