Zelensky: Ukraine will start joint production of weapons with the USA

Ukraine and the United States have agreed to start joint production of weapons, a move that will enable Kiev to begin production of air defense systems, President Volodymyr Zelensky said at the end of his visit to the US.

In a video address, Zelensky said the long-term deal would create new jobs and a new industrial base in Ukraine, whose economy has been devastated by the Russian invasion that began last year.

"It was a very important visit to Washington that brought very important results," said Zelensky.

"We will work together for Ukraine to produce the necessary weapons together with the United States. Joint production in the defense sector with the USA is a historic thing," the Ukrainian leader added.

Kiev has stepped up efforts to boost domestic arms production as demand for weapons has surged in Ukraine, which has been facing an unprovoked Russian invasion for 19 months.

The Ukrainian president said that the Ministry for Strategic Industries, which will oversee production in Ukraine, has signed cooperation agreements with three associations, which include over 2,000 American defense companies.

Ukraine is very dependent on the support of the West by sending arms. To reduce this dependence, Zelensky and his team are looking to reform Ukraine's defense industry, modernize state-made weapons and increase supplies to the front line./REL
