A year ago, it would have been worth saying the expression that "long life does not become short-lived", but the situation has changed after a year.

Death row inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith survived an execution attempt last year after the team responsible for the procedure was unable to identify the veins into which to inject the poison and the 58-year-old was strapped to a stretcher for four hours.

But now the situation has changed and for the first time in the USA, pure nitrogen absorption will be used in his case, for the first time to execute a prisoner.

After failing to find the veins last year, it was decided by the responsible team to experiment with nitrogen hypoxia.

Nitrogen hypoxia is a technique that causes death by suffocation and asphyxiation within four to five minutes. Through a mask, the subject inhales the gas and begins to feel a lack of oxygen.

This method has been described as barbaric by human rights associations, including the NGO Equal Justice Initiative, which have protested against it.

As for Kenneth Eugene Smith, he was sentenced first to life imprisonment, then to death in 1988 for the commissioned stabbing death of Elizabeth Dorlene Sennett, the wife of a pastor at Wetside Church in Sheffield.
