After seventy years, Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch has announced his retirement from leading News Corp and Fox.
The 92-year-old billionaire will take the title of honorary president, while his son Lachlan will be at the helm of both companies.
In a statement, News Corp explained that at the end of a career that began in 1954, Murdoch, who turned 92 in March, is leaving the publishing company, which includes among its publications the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, Dow Jones and Barron's in the US and the Times, Sunday Times and The Sun tabloid in the UK.
From the American television corporation Fox, Murdoch will be released at the next meetings in mid-November. His son Lachlan will become sole president of News Corp, continuing to serve as executive chairman and CEO of Fox Corporation.
"On behalf of the Boards of Directors of Fox and News Corp, the management teams and all the shareholders who have benefited from his work, I congratulate my father on his extraordinary 70-year career," said Lachlan Murdoch.
"We thank him for his vision, his pioneering spirit, his unwavering determination and the lasting legacy he left behind for the companies he founded. We are grateful that in his role as Honorary Chairman he will continue to provide invaluable advice to both companies," he concluded.
