A breakthrough of deposits of an expensive element could fundamentally change the economy of the United States.

It is called "white gold" and is a giant deposit of lithium, a highly coveted element in recent years due to the increased production of rechargeable batteries.

There was already a reservoir of lithium under the Salton Sea, however, a group of scientists' study began an effort to understand how much "white gold" was in the underground.

Through drilling beneath the lake, the team of scientists has confirmed that there is a staggering four million tons of lithium. And they believe that could grow to as much as 18 million tons.

La Times climate reporter Sammy Roth told KJZZ Radio that "they found that there is potentially enough lithium to power the batteries for 382 million electric vehicles, which is more, more vehicles than there are currently on the road in the United States."

Professor of geochemistry at the University of California, Riverside, Michael MKibben, also revealed that "this is one of the largest deposits of lithium salt in the world. "This could make the United States fully self-sufficient in lithium and stop importing it through China."

Lithium is made of batteries not only for electric cars, but also for cell phones and laptops.
