A terrible story, especially if you consider that it happened almost 35 years ago, in November 1989, and for decades it was labeled as a suicide.
Denis Bergamini, the former Cosenza player and his family will finally get justice on October 1. Meanwhile, during the trial of ex-girlfriend Isabella Internò, accused of organizing a murder then carried out by others, some chilling details emerged during the indictments.
Prosecutors said that once the footballer's girlfriend realized that their relationship was really over, she carried out the plan to kill him. The trial actually established that Denis Bergamini died of "mechanical asphyxiation", before being placed on the asphalt already dead, in what is described as "a macabre and miserable staging".
The evidence, added to the "clearly false" statements from Internò, makes it clear that it was an "honor killing", sold for three decades as a suicide.
"Isabella Internò killed Denis Bergamini to save her honor, since the footballer did not want to marry her. She had become pregnant and therefore had an abortion at a clinic in London. After the abortion, she asked for a "compensation" marriage, according to the indictment, while Bergamini, despite wanting to keep the child, did not want to marry her because of her obsessive character. The woman pursued the football player, even though their relationship had been closed for months," prosecutors said.
Now, the prosecutors are asking for 23 years in prison for the ex-girlfriend.
The charge is intentional homicide in collaboration with unknown persons.
Unknown because due to a series of investigative errors after the death of the footballer, the suspected perpetrators have not yet been identified.
