The first death row inmate in 13 years is executed in South Carolina

South Carolina has executed its first death row inmate in 13 years. Freddie Owens was injected with a lethal substance.

The 46-year-old was found guilty by a jury of murdering Irene Graves, a convenience store employee, in a 1997 armed robbery.

Owens was executed despite the other co-defendant in the case signing a statement this week claiming the victim was not present at the time of the robbery and murder.

The South Carolina Supreme Court refused to stay his execution, saying the newly-revealed allegations were inconsistent with the testimony given at his trial.

According to media reports, Owens was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. after being injected with pentobarbital. "He made no final statement," the BBC said.

Owens was sentenced to death in 1999, two years after killing Graves. On the day he was found guilty, he killed a convict with whom he shared a cell.

International media write that Owens was 19 years old when he killed Graves, in an attempt to rob the store, while his accomplice, 18 years old.

He shot the mother of three after failing to open a safe. Owens' lawyers tried twice to stay his execution, but the court denied both requests.

Owens' mother considers her son's execution a great injustice.

South Carolina convicts are allowed to choose whether they want to die by lethal injection, electric chair or firing squad.
