The first Israeli airstrike in downtown Beirut in more than a month has killed Mohammed Afif, Hezbollah's chief spokesman, an official from the group has confirmed to the Guardian and Associated Press.
Afif was in the spotlight following Israel's military escalation in September and after the assassination of Hezbollah's longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah, who was also killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Israeli warplanes had earlier struck Beirut's southern suburbs after the military warned people to evacuate from several buildings. The Hezbollah militant group has a strong presence in the area, known as Dahiyeh, and the attacks came as Lebanese officials are reviewing a U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal.
