A 6-year-old boy originally from Palestine and his mother were attacked with a knife on Saturday by a 71-year-old man in the US. The minor son died while the 32-year-old mother was injured.

The perpetrator, identified as Joseph M. Czuba of Illinois, the owner of the apartment where the victims lived according to CNN, was charged with a hate crime on Sunday. The area sheriff's office said the suspect, Czuba, did not give an explanation to detectives, but investigators determined the victims were "targeted by the suspect because they were Muslim."

American media linked the incident to the war between Israel and Hamas, while the White House said the Palestinian family had arrived in the US seeking a better life. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden offered condolences and expressed "shock" at the attack.
