A drone attack on a US base in Jordan left 3 dead and at least 34 injured. 

US President Joe Biden has blamed Iran-backed militant groups and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. 

It is the first time an American soldier has been killed by hostile fire in the Middle East since the war between Israel and Hamas began. The incident could further raise tensions in the region, adding to fears of a wider conflict directly involving Tehran. 

Biden said the attacks were carried out by armed groups backed by Iran.

"While we are still gathering the facts about the attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iranian-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq," Mr. Biden said in a statement.

President Biden said the United States "will hold accountable all those involved and they will be held accountable at the time and in the manner we choose."

Later, in a church banquet hall in South Carolina, the president held a moment of silence for the American troops killed in the attack, then said: "We will respond."
