The man considered the most notorious drug trafficker has launched another battle to overturn his life sentence in the United States and regain his freedom.
Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman received the maximum sentence from the US court in 2019 and since then has been behind bars at the maximum security prison "ADX Florence", in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. He was found guilty of trafficking tons of cocaine from Mexico to America over several decades, as well as money laundering.
But, according to American media, he has asked to be released or retried. In the documents sent to the court, which bear the signature of El Chapo himself, it is said that his extradition to the USA was done unjustly and also the treatment that was done to him in America was unconstitutional.
Former U.S. Attorney Gil Soffer told ABC7 television that the request is a standard procedure used by nearly all those sentenced to life in prison, but is unlikely to be considered by the court. "He is showing that he is still alive, that he still has something to say. But the problem is that he must prove that there was unconstitutional treatment against him and that the decision would have been different if his rights had not been violated", said Soffer.
