Two powerful earthquakes have caused severe destruction in Venezuela.
The first tremor reached magnitude 7.2, while less than a minute later a second one with magnitude 7.5 followed.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the death toll could reach 10,000 to 100,000. Several buildings collapsed in the capital, Caracas.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency in an address to the nation. She called the event an “incident with grave consequences.” So far, she has confirmed 32 deaths and at least 700 injuries.
30,000 dead from previous earthquakes
Venezuela is located in an active seismic zone, where the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates meet. The capital Caracas was hit by a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 1967. In 1812, a devastating earthquake in Caracas and Mérida killed an estimated 30,000 people.
Thousands of people are reported missing.
More than 8,800 people are being searched for on a missing persons website after a double earthquake struck Venezuela. Official figures put the death toll at 32, but there are fears the death toll could run into the thousands, even tens of thousands.
"Dozens of buildings have collapsed"
According to acting president Delcy Rodríguez, the federal state of La Guaira has been hit hardest.
"Dozens of buildings have collapsed there and intensive rescue operations are underway to save the lives that God allows us to save," Rodríguez said.
This country is home to, among other things, the Caracas international airport and an important seaport.
Panic also in Japan, schools closed
After a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, more than 100 schools in the region remain closed as a safety precaution. The affected areas are prefectures on the northern tip of the island.
While no official earthquake warning has been issued, the public has been urged to exercise increased caution: "We should expect earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher in the coming days. Particularly strong earthquakes are possible in the next two to three days. There is a possibility of another earthquake with strong tremors occurring within the next week."
