Two catastrophic earthquakes shake Venezuela, at least 32 dead and 700 injured

Two consecutive earthquakes have killed at least 32 people in Venezuela, while at least 700 others have been injured, acting president Delcy Rodríguez said.

The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2, while the second, which struck less than a minute later, was even more powerful, with a magnitude of 7.5.

The epicenter of the second tremor was located 23 kilometers southeast of Yumare, a center with about 20 thousand inhabitants near the coast, approximately 300 kilometers west of Caracas.

At the time of the earthquakes, Venezuela was celebrating a national holiday, and many people were at home when the tremors began at 6:04 p.m. local time. The tremors were felt across the country, as far away as Bogotá, Colombia.

Serious problems with communication systems have been reported in Caracas, Miranda and La Guaira.

Difficulties in making phone calls and accessing internet and data services, according to local media, have complicated communication between family members, especially for Venezuelans living in other parts of the country or abroad who are trying to get news about their relatives in the affected areas.

Telecommunications service outages are common after high-intensity earthquakes like this one, due to the large and simultaneous load on networks, as well as possible damage to infrastructure.

However, so far, no telecommunications company has published an official statement regarding the causes of these outages.
