Norway's decision: The military will protect gas and oil platforms

Norway will deploy the military to protect its oil and gas facilities from possible sabotage after two Russian gas pipelines bringing gas to Europe were attacked, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said.

A gas leak resulting from possible sabotage discovered on the Nord Stream gas pipeline on Tuesday has caused confusion in energy markets and heightened security concerns.

Norway is currently the largest supplier of gas in Europe and the main global supplier of oil.

The gas pipeline network of 9000 kilometers

It has more than 90 offshore gas and oil fields, most of which are connected by a network of gas pipelines stretching for about 9,000 kilometers.

"The military will be more visible at Norwegian oil and gas facilities," the prime minister said, adding that the attack would be "responded together with our allies".

Norway is a member of the NATO alliance.

At sea, the navy would be engaged to protect naval installations, and on land, the police could increase their presence at the installations.

NATO and the European Union stressed the need to protect critical infrastructure and warned of a "strong and united response" if there were more attacks.

Beware of unknown aircraft

On Monday, the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Agency called for greater vigilance over unidentified drones seen near Norway's offshore oil and gas platforms, warning that they could pose a risk of accidents or deliberate attacks.

Stoere said the drone flight "mostly happened in September" and that they were of "various sizes" and that their activity was "unusual".

He reiterated that he saw no specific threats against Norway's offshore gas and oil sector and did not seek military assistance from allies.
