Vatican: Pope Francis suffered two episodes of acute respiratory failure

Pope Francis, battling double pneumonia in hospital, has suffered two episodes of "acute respiratory failure" and required the use of non-invasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican said.

Pope Francis has been in Rome's Gemelli Hospital for more than two weeks. He was admitted on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection that caused other complications.

"Today, the Holy Father had two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by the considerable accumulation of endobronchial mucus and as a consequence of bronchial spasm. Therefore, two bronchoscopies were performed with the need to aspirate copious secretions," the Vatican Press Office reports.

Therefore, the Pope remains in serious condition and requires high-dose oxygen therapy, and for this reason the prognosis remains reserved.

Due to today's new respiratory crisis and the resulting bronchial spasm, Pope Francis has been placed back on non-invasive mechanical ventilation since Monday afternoon, on the orders of the Gemelli doctors.

"The Holy Father has always remained vigilant, oriented and cooperative," the Vatican announced.
