Ukraine today claimed responsibility for the attack on two oil tankers in the Black Sea, saying it struck them with naval drones targeting ships of the Russian "shadow fleet" used by Moscow to evade Western sanctions.
A source from the Ukrainian security services (SBU) told the French News Agency that the tankers Kairos and Virat were hit by "Sea Baby" drones during a joint operation by the SBU and the Ukrainian Navy.
According to this source, the ships were empty at the time of the attack and were "heading towards the Russian port of Novorossiysk" to refuel with hydrocarbons.
“Video footage shows that after being hit, both tankers suffered severe damage and were practically out of service. This is a major blow to Russian oil transportation,” said an SBU official, who spoke on condition of anonymity and was quoted by Reuters. He did not specify when exactly the attack took place.
