The Epstein case continues to roil the Donald Trump administration, to the point where it risks triggering a crisis capable of destroying the FBI. At the same time, this situation is also straining the base of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement, which expected the maximum transparency promised by the president.

Some are also disappointed by the sudden intervention in foreign policy, from the bombings in Iran to the current escalation of tensions with Russian leader Putin over Ukraine.

" La Repubblica " writes that the FBI is experiencing uncertainty because Deputy Director Dan Bongino is considering leaving his post, citing disagreements over the handling of the case of convicted sex offender financier Jeffrey Epstein by the Justice Department and Secretary Bondi. This is according to the website Semafor and other media outlets.

If Bongino resigns, there is also the possibility that FBI Director Kash Patel will follow the same path.

Bongino is disappointed because during the presidential campaign, Trump had promised to bring complete transparency and Secretary Bondi had stated that she had classified documents on her desk with the names of Epstein's "clients", promising to release them. Now, however, she has changed her position, saying that Epstein committed suicide and that there is no list of clients who had frequented his underage daughters.

The Maga community expected to find the names of Democratic political opponents among these documents, but after his disagreement with Trump, Elon Musk wrote on social media that the president's own name also appears in those documents.

Bongino has not yet made a final decision on his resignation, but he did not show up for work on Friday, following a confrontational meeting at the White House with Bond earlier this week, according to Axios. It is not yet clear when, or if, he will return to duty.

In case Bongino leaves, Patel's future will remain uncertain; he may decide to do the same, according to sources at Semafor and other media outlets.

Both Bongino and Patel want Bondi to resign as Attorney General, and so does the MAGA movement's base, which has been frustrated for days over this case and other Trump decisions they have not liked, including cuts to the Medicaid healthcare program, approved in the recent spending bill called the "Big Beautiful Bill," which has hurt many of the Republicans' young working-class voters.
