The mayor of Villeneuve-de-Marc in the province of Isere in France, Gilles Dussault, has been hospitalized in serious condition after a violent attack he suffered this afternoon.

The 63-year-old officer was walking with his son on a city street when an unknown person attacked him with an "unidentified object", according to the prosecutor's office, which has taken over the investigation.

The mayor was hit in the chest and taken to the Edouard Herriot hospital in Lyon. His 28-year-old son suffered minor injuries and is being treated at a hospital in Vienna.

According to initial investigations, the perpetrator is a resident of the city. He tried to escape in a car that abandoned him after crashing into a wall, before fleeing on foot.

In a press release, the Prefect of Isère, Catherine Séguin, "condemns in the most categorical way this serious and unacceptable act against elected officials who work for the general interest of the people".

Gilles Ducault is the mayor of Villeneuve-de-Marc, a village of less than 1,200 inhabitants.

In X, the Minister of Regional Planning, François Rebchamin, stated that he was "deeply shocked by the violent attack against the mayor of Villeneuve-de-Marc and his son".

"An elected representative of the Republic and his family were attacked, it is unacceptable. The perpetrator must be found and punished with the utmost severity," he added.
