Gun attack at the US base, five soldiers are injured

Five soldiers were shot and wounded on Wednesday at the Fort Stewart military base in southeast Georgia, USA, before the attacker was arrested.

A spokesman said some parts of the base had been closed earlier on Wednesday after a gunman was reported to the army's large post office.

"Five soldiers were shot today in an active shooting incident in the area of the Combat Team of the 2nd Armored Brigade. All soldiers were treated at the scene and transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment. There is no active threat to the community," the base said in a Facebook post.

The organizer of the attack had been arrested and taken into custody, the army said early Wednesday afternoon.

"The installation was closed at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement are at the scene at that time," a previous Facebook post said. "Victims have been reported and the situation is ongoing."

Located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest army post east of the Mississippi River. It is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the army's Third Infantry Division and their family members.

"Due to the lockdown status, all gates at Fort Stewart are currently closed," the base said on social media.

Savannah-based news portal WTOC TV reported early Wednesday afternoon that four people had been taken to the hospital and that police were aware of the identity of a suspect.
