US President Donald Trump has expressed curiosity about the idea that Volodomyr Zelensky has been serving as president for more than three years, because his country cannot hold elections in times of war.

Asked by a journalist, Zelensky said he is ready to hold elections as soon as possible, but in peacetime.

"Absolutely, I am ready, but we need peace, we need peace on earth, in the sky, for people to vote freely and democratically," Zelensky said.

The President of Ukraine was interrupted by Trump: "So you are saying that if the country is at war you can stay without elections hmm...".

"Good idea, right," Zelensky replied.
